Intercultural Relationships

The London Intercultural Couples Centre was set up in 2016 by Dr. Reenee Singh, Professor Janet Reibstein and Mr. Adrian Clarke, at the Child and Family Practice. Since its inception, we have received innumerable referrals from intercultural and interfaith couples, from all over the world. We have carried out a multi-site, pan European research project, have published two books and numerous chapters in books and journal articles. We have run an online group and are developing intercultural couples retreats, workshops and training for professionals.

We define intercultural very broadly, referring to interracial, interfaith, intercultural, political, class, generational and other differences. We also define relationships very broadly. This covers a gamut of cohabiting, commuting, romantic and parenting relationships. We include heterosexual, same sex and polyamorous relationship formations.

We work with issues such as:

  • Premarital interfaith relationship therapy

  • Managing parents and in-laws expectations of an intercultural couple relationship

  • Navigating becoming parents and cultural and religious issues around parenting

  • How to talk about ‘race’ and racism

  • Understanding the meaning of home

  • How to bring up mixed race children

We have collaborated with professionals from other institutions and countries.  We are planning a special event to celebrate ten years.
